Lesson #24 – Wind and Range Analysis
Focus: Wind/Analyzing The Range
10 minutes – Discussion Points/Important Questions:
Ask the athletes: Walk me through step-by-step, how you approach the range in a race. 100m out, see the range sign, start to slow down and take lots of deep breaths, sunglasses up and poles off, come into the range and source out where your rifle is being put down, make sure you look at the wind flags and target. Lay down on your mat in a good position, check your natural alignment (mostly for those on slings), and begin your shooting.
Why do we look at wind flags? So we can see if the wind is the same as it was when we zeroed. (Athletes might not correct their own rifles during races yet, but should know to shoot in the same conditions if possible… I.e. Don’t shoot in a wind gust, etc., TTs should be learning corrections)
What is shading? When we aim off a perfect sight picture to adjust for the wind. When is it helpful? If we already corrected for the wind and it changes in the middle of our shooting bout.
15 minutes – Head Out to Range, Zero, Confirm, and Start 10 Minute Warm-up
35 minutes – Combo Practice Working on Session Focus
What to look for: Athletes looking at the range and their target before coming in, poles off in advance, slowing pace and increasing breathing.
25 minutes – 1 Skill/Drill Based on Focus: Shading
Athletes will have a paper target on Charlie. They will take 10 1-shots on Charlie, each time trying to adjust for the wind (not by correcting) but only by aiming off the target (shading). At the end of the 10 1-shots, they should go check their target to see how close they got to a center grouping.
1 Game: Mini Relay Fence Races Practicing range entry and poles on and off. Meet in the stadium. Make teams of 2. First racer goes, shoots, small penalty loops per miss, back around fence, tags partner, they repeat. 3 shooting bouts each. Poles must come on and off each time.
Equipment Needed: Z/C paper, target on Charlie for Skill/Drill, athletes need poles.
