Lesson #5 – Sight Picture

Focus: Sight Picture

10 Minutes – Discussion Points/Important Questions:

What is sight picture? What you see when you look down your sights. What do you want sight picture to look like/What is a good sight picture? When you can see all 3 circles (rear sight, front sight and target) all even in the middle.  (Demonstrate with Clear Plastic Sight Picture Papers, or a drawing on paper)

What happens if our sight picture isn’t perfect? We aren’t as consistent or accurate.

Does anyone know what aiming off is? When someone purposefully aims a bit off the target – usually to account for some wind. (We will be practicing aiming off today.)

Demonstrate how to aim off to hit the edge of the target with the Clear Plastic Sight Picture papers.

15 minutes – Head Out to Range, Zero, Confirm, and Start 10 Minute Warm-up

35 Minutes – Combo Practice Working on Session Focus

What to look for: Recoil on the rifle is straight up and down, athletes have clear view down the sights with no squinting or closing an eye. Athletes can tell you the sights are all lined up.  They could even draw you a picture of what they see when they look down their sights or describe it to you.

25 Minutes – 1 Skill/Drill Based on Focus: Around the Clock

Athletes will use 4 clips to shoot “around the clock” on Charlie.

They will put a shot at 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, 9 o’clock and one in the middle. Repeat x 4. They will have to aim off, so it’s important they know that where you want to hit, must be in the middle of your sights and your sights must still be lined up. They can look in the scope after each clip.

1 Game: In A Row –Targets on Manual Athletes get 4 clips to try to get as many shots in a row as they can. If they miss they go back to counting from zero. Ask at the end of the 4 clips, who got 2 in a row, 3… 4…. Etc. to see who got the highest.

 

 

 

 

Equipment Needed: 3 targets per lane, 2 for Z/C and 1 for skill/drill. Clear plastic outlines to show sight picture alignment or paper to draw example.
