Lesson #3 – Parents Night/Recruiting Helpers
Focus: Parents Night + Practicing a Race
10 minutes – Discussion Points/Important Questions
Ask the athletes, “What can you tell your parents about how to be safe on the range?”
Topics to make sure they cover: Red/Green Flag, firing line, opening of bolt and magazine out, pointing rifles in a safe direction.
Then ask the athletes about race day. On race day, we zero and confirm, why do we confirm? To have our heart rates higher so our shooting group looks how it will when we are racing.
How long do we need to confirm for? About 3 minutes so our heart rates become more steady and consistent.
How fast should we confirm? Race Pace
15 minutes – Head Out to Range, Zero, Confirm, and Start 10 Minute Warm-up – They should practice the race course for their warm-up.
Gather parents for race explanation.
35 minutes – Coach gathers athletes for race explanation + begin practice race with parents shuttling rifles and loading clips.
Reduce amount of lanes by 1/3 to mimic race setting.
3 shootings.
Run Course – Around a short loop.
Don’t forget to make a shorter penalty loop for the race.
25 minutes – 1 Skill/Drill: Let the parents try shooting.
Each athlete must help a parent to shoot.
1 Game: Parents vs. Athletes. – TARGETS ON MANUAL
Dedicate half the range to parents, half the range to athletes. Approx. 6 lanes vs. 6 lanes. Line everyone up at the fence, at “go” each group can fill their lanes and take one shot, then clear the rifle and the next person on the team can go. All 6 lanes of each team should be full at any time as the participants alternate after each shot. First side clean (parents or athletes, wins).
Equipment Needed: 2 targets per lane for Z/C, pylons for penalty loop and start/finish, target score sheets, tape + marker to mark rifles if needed, range passes or range agreements for parents.
